Find a song’s BPM by tapping

This free BPM tapper measures the time between your taps and converts it into beats per minute. Use it while listening to a track, counting a rhythm in your head or checking the pace of a practice session. You do not need to upload a song or allow microphone access.

How to use the bpm tapper

  1. Listen for the steady beat, usually the pulse you would nod your head to.
  2. Tap the button or spacebar once per beat. Keep going for at least four taps.
  3. Read the BPM, copy it, or open the delay calculator with that tempo.

Getting a useful tempo reading

The counter averages up to your last eight intervals. Once it has four intervals, it excludes gaps more than 35% away from the median, which helps with an accidental missed or extra tap. The steady/uneven label describes your tap spacing; it is not a confidence score for the song’s true tempo. If the number drifts, keep tapping consistently. It measures your timing; it does not analyse the recording. A track at 120 BPM has half a second between beats.

It is easy to count at half or double speed, especially with drum and bass or slow hip hop. Use ½ tempo or 2× tempo to compare the two interpretations. Press the same control again to return to the original reading, or tap the main pulse again. Use your ears to choose the tempo that makes sense for the track. Start a groove at that tempo in the beat maker, or practise matching tracks in the DJ mixer.

Is tap tempo the same as automatic BPM detection?

No. A tap tempo counter follows your taps. Automatic detection examines an audio file and can still make half-time or double-time mistakes. This tool is useful when you want a quick manual estimate.
