Transpose chords to a new key

Use this chord transposer to move a progression up or down while preserving the relationships between its chords. It can help you find a more comfortable singing range, play with another musician or try a familiar progression in a new register on your instrument.

How to use the chord transposer

  1. Paste chord names separated by spaces, commas, bars or new lines. For a lyric sheet, choose Chords + lyrics and use bracketed chords such as [Am].
  2. Choose the original key root and the new key root.
  3. Copy the transposed progression into your notes.

Example: C major to D major

C Am F G becomes D Bm G A. Every root moves up two semitones, while the chord qualities stay the same. Minor chords remain minor, seventh chords keep their seventh, and slash-chord bass notes move by the same amount. For example, D/F# moved up two semitones becomes E/G#.

The key menus show root notes. For A minor to C minor, choose A and C. This shifts the progression; it does not change a major progression into a minor progression. Sharps and flats are accepted, and results may use an equivalent note spelling.

Can I paste lyrics or upload a song?

Choose Chords + lyrics to preserve your words, section labels and line breaks while transposing bracketed chord symbols. Plain lyrics are never scanned for chord names: write [C] before a word when the chord changes. Copy the result or download your own .txt file. It accepts common symbols such as Am, Cmaj7, Dsus4 and G/B. It does not identify chords from a recording or change an audio file.
