Find scales that fit your notes
Select at least two notes and this scale finder searches a collection of major, natural minor, pentatonic, blues, Dorian, Mixolydian, Phrygian, Lydian, Locrian, harmonic minor, ascending melodic minor and double harmonic scales. Every result contains all the notes you selected. Scales with fewer extra notes appear first.
How to use the scale finder
- Select notes from a melody, chord or bassline.
- If you know the tonal centre, choose its root. Use Exact notes only to exclude scales that add notes.
- Read the matching scale notes or press Hear scale to listen.
Try C, E and G
These three notes form a C major triad, but they can belong to several scales. C major pentatonic and C major are useful places to start. Adding more notes narrows the results. Selecting a root helps you compare scales around the note that feels like home.
A matching note collection is a starting point, not proof of a song’s key. Rhythm, the bassline, chord movement and the notes you emphasise all affect how a melody feels. Experiment with the results on the online piano and listen against your actual progression.
Why are several scales listed?
Many scales share notes. A short melody may fit more than one major or minor key, especially when it uses only two or three different pitches. The tool starts with eight matches. Show more matches reveals the rest. Each card lists any additional notes so you can judge how closely it fits. The collection is not a catalogue of every possible scale.
Does it listen to my song?
No upload or microphone is needed. You choose the notes manually. Sharp and flat labels on the same button refer to the same pitch in this tool’s equal-tempered tuning.
